X-Cart to Pinnacle Cart MigrationX-Cart used to be SUCH a great platform, particularly if you were a ‘do it yourself’ store owner.  The forums were full of helpful people and there were tons of third party vendors like SafetyNetWeb and AlteredCart that provided all of the things that X-Cart didn’t.  Here at Ryan Design Studio, we personally built hundreds of sites with X-Cart.  I was even the moderator of their forums for years (username: balinor). While I was never thrilled with the bugs and constant patching, the cart was open source and we could build whatever we wanted with it.  Sadly, those days are long gone.

As you probably already know, X-Cart has seen better days.  The forums are a ghost town, the mod vendors have closed up shop and moved to greener pastures, and the new version of X-Cart is a shell of the old one.  So what can you do after spending tons of time and money building your site on X-Cart?  That’s where we come in.

Welcome to Pinnacle Cart

When X-Cart announced that they wouldn’t be making their cart PA-DSS compliant, we immediately started looking for a new platform.  It didn’t take us long to discover Pinnacle Cart.  After spending some time talking to their team and working with the cart, we quickly realized this is the cart X-Cart could have been.  Just a few of the benefits:

  • US-Based – tech support is English-speaking and gets back to you the same business day.
  • PA-DSS compliant – no need for clunky add-ons like X-Payments to accept credit cards on your site
  • Responsive template system – give your mobile users the same rich experience as desktop users
  • Smarty-based templates – if you can edit X-Cart templates, these will look QUITE familiar!
  • No more security patches – upgrade only when you want to
  • No more paid support – your Pinnacle Cart license entitles you to unlimited free support, phone too!
  • One-click upgrades – no manual patching or ‘could not patch’ errors!
  • Built-in support for many popular third party services such as Endicia, Stamps.com, Avalara and much more!
  • Tons of additional add-ons such as Reward Points, Amazon Pay, Custom Filters and more

So how does migration work?

It is not nearly as difficult as you think.  We have migrated over 75 clients from X-Cart to Pinnacle Cart, so we have it down to a science at this point.  Here’s how it works:

  • First, we’ll get you set up on our PCI Compliant, Cloud-based server with a new hosting account, and a fresh install of Pinnacle Cart.  For those of you who remember Emerson from EWD Hosting, our server is hosted at his current company, Total Server Solutions. Firewall, hourly backups, unlimited data/disk space – all the bells and whistles.  If you already have your own hosting account, we can also install Pinnacle Cart there.  It just needs to be PCI Compliant and running PHP 5.6 or higher.
  • Next, we’ll migrate your products, categories and text pages across so that you can see how the site is looking with your real data and make any edits you wish. Many of our clients like to use this process as a time to clean up their products and remove old, outdated items.
  • We’ll then either copy your existing design over to Pinnacle Cart, or one of our designers can create a modern, responsive template for you.  It is about the same cost either way, so this would be a great opportunity to freshen up your site!
  • If you have any custom functionality or features on your old X-Cart, we’ll install the appropriate add-ons or custom develop anything you need.  There is nothing we cannot do, as the cart is 100% open source.
  • Finally, we’ll migrate your customers and order data, preserving everything except the customer passwords.  They will need to reset it the first time they log in to the old site, but that is a simple, automated process.  We typically recommend closing down ordering on your X-Cart site as we do this migration, as we don’t want to miss any new orders that come in.  The customer/order migration usually takes less than 2 hours, so the downtime is minimal.  Your SEO urls can remain the same, so no need for any redirects, and we can also set your site to https as Google now requires.

How long does it take?

We’ve done migrations in as little as 2 weeks, but it can take up to 6 depending on how complex your design is, if we are designing a new template, or if you require custom programming.  Time is money, so we won’t let things drag out for months like some other developers.

How much does it cost?

Ah, the most important question of all!  It is tough to provide an exact cost as each store is different, but our base price of $1500 includes:

  • License, installation and configuration of Pinnacle Cart on the server of your choice
  • Shipping, Payment method and Tax setup
  • Choice of our stock template or one of Pinnacle Cart’s stock templates
  • Addition of your logo and minor changes to colors and fonts
  • Migration of your products, categories, text pages, orders and customers
  • Our Responsive Front Page Slideshow module

Adding a custom design, migrating your existing design, custom programming and add-on modules would be additional, and we will provide a detailed estimate for each.

What do you get?

  • Free Tech Support – All of our clients get free support directly from us for the life of your site.  No more dealing with overseas tech support or paying by the ticket.  If you have a problem, you email me personally and I’ll usually answer within an hour (I hate a full inbox).  If the isuse requires support from Pinnacle Cart directly, we’ll handle that for you as well.
  • Pinnacle Cart license – We cover the initial license cost for you, which is $1495 if you purchase it directly from Pinnacle Cart.  The recurring cost is $25/month, which gives you access to upgrades and support.
  • Hosting – $40/month, and the first 3 months are free.  We bill annually in January, as that saves us all the headache and fees of monthly billing.  We can also set up Pinnacle on the server of your choice.
  • Add-ons and customizations – You will have access to all of our add-on modules and customizations, and you also have priority access to custom development.  That means that if you have a project you would like us to create, you get bumped up in the queue ahead of any new clients we take on.

Can you still edit templates yourself?

Absolutely!  All of the templates are Smarty-based, so once you get familiar with the variables, you can be writing {if} statements just like you did on X-Cart.  Pinnacle Cart even provides a ‘debug’ mode which will list all available Smarty variables on a given page.  There is also a ‘design mode’ function which lets you edit text, images, buttons and even the layout on the fly.  If you would rather not be a coder any longer, we can certainly handle it for you.

Interested?

I’ll be happy to talk to you about the whole process and provide an exact quote for your specific site.  Just drop us an email, and we can either discuss the project via email or set up a phone call.

X-Cart is a sinking ship, get out while the getting is still good!
